What is the “World’s Largest K1 Go-Kart Race” in Irondale?
This one is happening right now. Seventy years after the very first go-kart was built, K1 Speed locations around the world are throwing a birthday party for the sport. On Friday, August 28, the Irondale track joins K1 tracks worldwide for an event billed as the “World’s Largest K1 Go-Kart Race,” with points from every U.S. race that day counting toward the global event. The top three finishers at each location win free race packages.
Leading up to race day, single races are on sale for $19.56 from August 24 through 27, a nod to the year the go-kart was invented. The first 100 people in the pits on race day get a commemorative patch. K1 Speed opened in Irondale in June and has been packed since. The general manager says people drive in from as far as Montgomery, Tuscaloosa and Meridian. Friday nights feature Glow Night racing in the dark.
What is Taste of Shelby County?
On Thursday, September 10 at 6 p.m., Taste of Shelby County returns for its 18th year at Inverness Country Club, just off U.S. 280. About 20 restaurants, bakeries and beverage vendors bring samples, and you graze your way around the room. This year’s lineup includes local favorites like Good People Brewing, La Paz, Half Shell Oyster House, Taziki’s, Cookie Fix and Perry’s Steakhouse.
Tickets are $50 in advance, $60 at the door, and $75 for VIP, with proceeds supporting the Shelby County Schools Education Foundation. It’s a casual, come-and-go evening, and a great excuse to eat well for a good cause.
