QUICK SUMMARY
As of late September 2026, ALDOT is closing individual I-459 entrance and exit ramps in Hoover overnight, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., one at a time, as part of a 3.2-mile resurfacing project running from south of SR-150 (Exit 10) to north of US-31 (Exit 13). The first round covers September 20 through 24, with additional rounds scheduled for September 27 to October 1, October 4 to 7, and October 8 to 14. ALDOT recommends SR-150 between US-31 and Exit 10 as the alternate. The interstate itself stays open. ALDOT said on September 18 that the contractor should wrap up the full resurfacing job by spring 2027, if not sooner.
If you live in Riverchase, Patton Chapel, Trace Crossings or anywhere that funnels onto I-459 through the Galleria area, you are about to spend a month noticing which ramp is closed tonight. This is a resurfacing project, not a widening, so the disruption is real but temporary and almost entirely after dark.
Here are the dates ALDOT has published, the detour, and the part homeowners and relocating buyers usually actually want to know.
Which I-459 ramps are closing, and when?
ALDOT published the first round of nightly southbound closures on September 18. Each listed ramp closes from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. for milling work:
September 20 to 21. US-31 on ramp to I-459 southbound.
September 22. Galleria Flyover off ramp, Exit 13A.
September 23. US-31 off ramp, Exit 13B.
September 24. SR-150 off ramp, Exit 10.
Three more rounds are already on the calendar, for September 27 through October 1, October 4 through 7, and October 8 through 14. ALDOT said specifics for each round will be announced before it begins, and that the whole schedule depends on weather and is subject to change.
The recommended alternate is SR-150 between US-31 and Exit 10. For most Hoover trips that is a reasonable swap, though it is the same corridor that carries a lot of the Trace Crossings and Stadium Trace traffic, so allow a few extra minutes rather than assuming it is empty at 9 p.m.

What is the project, and when does it end?
ALDOT started the job in July 2026. The official project record describes it as micro-milling, resurfacing, guardrail installation, concrete cleaning and traffic striping on I-459 from the south end of the bridge over SR-150 (milepost 10.730) to the north end of the ramps at US-31 (milepost 13.996), a length of 3.265 miles, in Jefferson County.
On the end date, be aware there are two numbers in circulation, and they do not agree. ALDOT’s project page lists a projected completion of fall 2026. The September 18 announcement about the ramp closures says the contractor should wrap up the total resurfacing project by spring 2027, if not sooner. The September statement is the newer of the two, so that is the one we would plan around, while treating fall 2026 as optimistic.
Either way, the meaningful point for daily life is that this is surface work with night closures, not a multi-year rebuild with lane reductions at rush hour. That is a very different animal from what US 280 just went through.
Does road work like this affect home values in Hoover?
Resurfacing, essentially never. It is maintenance. Nobody prices a house on new asphalt, and nobody discounts one for four weeks of overnight ramp closures that will be over before most listings close.
Capacity projects are the ones that move the needle, because they change how long it takes to get somewhere every day for the next twenty years. The US 280 widening that opened in September 2026 is that kind of project, and it genuinely changed the calculus for buyers weighing Homewood and Vestavia Hills against points farther out 280. A milling and resurfacing job on 3.2 miles of I-459 is not in that category.
Where it does matter is in the short term, for two specific groups. Sellers with evening showings and open houses in Riverchase and the Galleria area should check the night’s closure before telling buyers which exit to take. And out-of-state buyers doing a compressed weekend house-hunting trip should know that an unfamiliar detour at 8 p.m. is the fastest way to form a bad impression of a neighborhood that is actually fine.
A local perspective from The Williams Group
The Williams Group at Keller Williams Realty works the Hoover market out of our Birmingham office on Grandview Parkway, and commute questions come up in nearly every relocation conversation. Hoover is a big city geographically, and the honest answer to “how is the commute” depends enormously on which side of it you are on.
This particular stretch of I-459 is the seam. North of it you are into the Riverchase and Galleria side, where US-31 and the flyover carry a lot of daily traffic and where the drive downtown or to UAB is short. South and west of Exit 10 you are into the SR-150 corridor, Trace Crossings, Lake Cyrus and the Stadium Trace area, which is newer construction and more car-dependent by design. Buyers comparing the two sides on price alone often miss that they are comparing two different commutes.
The other Hoover wrinkle worth knowing before you shop is that the city straddles two counties, and the tax bill is not the same on both sides. We broke that down in detail in Hoover: Jefferson County vs. Shelby County. On a $400,000 home, the difference is not trivial.

Frequently asked questions
Is I-459 itself closing in Hoover?
No. The published closures are individual entrance and exit ramps, closed one at a time overnight from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The mainline interstate remains open.
Will the Galleria exit be closed during the day?
Not under the announced schedule. The Galleria Flyover off ramp, Exit 13A, was listed for the overnight window of September 22 only in the first round. Later rounds have not been detailed yet, and ALDOT says specifics will come before each round begins.
What is the best detour during the closures?
ALDOT recommends SR-150 between US-31 and Exit 10. Checking ALGO Traffic before you leave is worth the ten seconds, since the schedule shifts with weather.
Should road construction change when I list my Hoover house?
No. Overnight ramp closures on a resurfacing job are not a reason to delay a listing. Showing logistics and pricing matter far more. If you want a read on your specific street and price band, that is a better conversation than a construction calendar.
