It was his most detailed local conversation since he took over as president in 2025.
UA is the engine of the Tuscaloosa economy. When the university grows, the housing market feels it – from campus condos to family homes in Northport. Here is what Mohler said, in plain language, and what it could mean for local homeowners and buyers.
What is the “Future Ready” plan?
Mohler’s big idea is simple. UA has been the University of Alabama for 196 years. He wants people across the state to think of it as the University for Alabama. That means training nurses for Alabama hospitals, leading on AI instead of chasing it, and helping build new industries when old ones – like the BFGoodrich tire plant – shut down.
In his words, it is about “knocking down the walls” between campus and the community, so students work on real problems facing the state.
What new schools is UA opening?
1. The School of Data Sciences. This is the first school of its kind in Alabama. It will teach AI and data skills to students in every major, not just engineering. Mohler says the courses will keep changing as the technology changes.
2. The School of Leadership and Policy. Started this year, this school adds leadership training on top of any major. The goal is for every UA graduate to leave with “leadership fluency” along with their degree.
Two new schools means new faculty, new staff, and over time, more students. All of them need somewhere to live.

How is UA using AI?
UA now has a campus AI policy and an AI hub that lists which tools students and faculty can use and for what. Mohler compares AI to computers, the internet, and the graphing calculator – new tools each generation had to learn to use responsibly. UA also built an AI and data training program for its own faculty and staff this past year.
His bigger point for the region: companies looking at Alabama want a workforce that knows these tools. A university leading on AI helps recruit those employers – and the jobs that come with them.
What about the nursing shortage?
Alabama is short about 13,000 nurses right now. Mohler says that number could reach 38,000 within five years. UA’s answer is to roughly double nursing enrollment and graduate about 550 more nurses each year – a plan we covered in more detail when the Capstone College of Nursing expansion was announced.
Mohler also stressed keeping those nurses in Alabama after they graduate. UA is meeting with hospitals and clinics in all 67 counties to line up jobs for its grads.
